Joseph Gordon Moore, Ph.D, LCSW

Therapist and retired social worker Dr. Joseph “Joe” Gordon Moore’s love of life didn’t come to an end with his death. Joe passed away on April 16th at the age of 79 after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest.

Joe was born to Joseph A. Moore and Betty Gordon on March 28, 1943. He then went to Trinity School, completed his Bachelor’s degree at Trinity College, and then pursued a Master’s degree in Social Work at Columbia University. Joe then proudly fulfilled his dream and earned a Doctorate in Social Work at Fordham University. Dr. Moore worked in both the private and public sectors for over 40 years in New York City. He worked as a social worker specializing with foster children at the Catholic Diocese of NY, and as Director of Training at Cardinal McCloskey Services. He was a staff member of the Child Welfare League of America, where he consulted with multi-service agencies across the United States. His particular interests were in the area of adolescence and groups. After 9/11, Dr. Moore volunteered with families and survivors at the Family Assistance Center (Pier 94) and with the recovery workers at St. Paul’s Chapel in Lower Manhattan. In semi- retirement, Joe served as President of the Board of the Analytical Psychology Club of New York, served on the Advisory Board for Thread Connects, and was an active member of PFLAG-NYC. Joe also had a thriving private therapy practice for years with many clients who loved him dearly.

Joe liked to travel and play his cherished golf and was also a fan of the incredible NY Yankees since childhood and enjoyed attending and watching many games with his family and friends. Joe also went on many trips to his favorite Caribbean island of Saint Croix from which part of his family originated. Joe loved family parties and quiet evenings with friends. He was a leader and friend to everyone he met. Joe is survived by his wife, Jenny Roper; his daughters, Melissa Moore Reimertz and Emily Murray; their husbands’ David Reimertz and Andrew Murray; and his beloved grandchildren, Justin Reimertz, Deanna Reimertz, Bryan Reimertz, Blair Murray, and Brendan Murray. He is also survived by his sister, Judy Rice and her family, Megan Rice, Josh Rice and Liz Favret and their children Thea and Duncan, as well as many cousins and friends that loved Joe.

A celebration of Joe’s life will be planned for June. Details will be provided shortly.
